Duolingo UX Redesign

Project Type

User Experience Re-Design

Date

Fall 2022

Location

New York City

Role

Co-Designer

As a team, we redesigned the Duolingo app for a better user experience!

We want to redesign Duolingo for users who want to legitimately learn a new language, but as an engaging activity during their spare time because despite their busy schedules, they want to consistently improve and practice their language skills.

We feel there are potential issues, such as [1. lack of authentic learning interactions with other language learners, 2. inaccessible early lessons and inability to skip or go back to lessons, 3. an overemphasis on the superficial gamified structure that does not deeply connect with the language learning experience, 4. no review of complex concepts, 5. too much repetition or too slow a build-up to contextual exercises, 6. lack of variety of question types, especially contextual and visual questions, 7. inconsistent error measurement, 8. lack of clear progress tracking] that can be improved with a redesign, though we need to investigate these further through more research and usability testing.

We hope this redesign will [motivate learners to consistently try to improve their language learning skills while feeling encouraged, satisfied, and rewarded].

A few things to keep in mind as we design for this group is that [our users are busy and need to stay engaged to want to continue learning; while gamification may be engaging, the loss of a limited number of “hearts” in response to errors may cause users to quit the app before they otherwise would].
